All of these paintings depict themes about time within the pandemic. A young girl, my daughter, has excitedly dressed in her finest to visit at a distance with her new neighbor friends. My late father, whom I couldn’t visit before he died, is memorialized for teaching me how to see. A then meaningless night at Mercado San Augustin is now transformed into the headstone of carefree socializing. Time’s context is transformative; similarly, so is our response to tragedy. Like a holographic picture that switches with a slight tilt, each image is embedded with equal parts of resilience and trauma.
