Abstract painting is the most purely expressive art I’ve ever done. Representational painting is wonderful, but you have a goal of approaching subject verisimilitude (usually). In abstract, I begin with nada (nothing) and sometimes end up with algo (something). If I’m lucky. Oftentimes nada means nada and that’s okay too. You have to be calm and carry on when you explore design and color and mark-making and composition all at the same time. Moreover, you must approach it as play … very, very serious play :) Educated play really, since to be successful, you must understand all the basic concepts of what makes a good art period. I think this is what makes the process so endlessly fascinating to me.
